Ramsey Elkholy is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and anthropologist who created Monotronic in 2016 as a collaborative indietronica collective. He conceived the band as a unified stream of sound in which instruments interact as a single living system. Rooted in a communal philosophy, the project emphasizes shared creativity over individual attention. Each contributor brings personal textures and ideas, shaping music that feels cohesive, immersive, and organically layered.

Elkholy’s academic pursuits strongly inform his artistry. He earned a PhD in Anthropology and authored Being and Becoming: Embodiment and Experience Among the Orang Rimba of Sumatra. His work explores rainforest foragers in Indonesia and their relationship to land, ritual, and identity. Years of travel through Asia and India expanded his cultural awareness, deepening his sensitivity to rhythm, tradition, and the dynamics of collective expression.

Spending three years backpacking around the world and two years living among the Orang Rimba tribe, Ramsey Elkholy Monotronic absorbed the rainforest’s intricate soundscape. He often described the forest at night as a vast arrangement of overlapping pulses and tones. Those impressions echo through Monotronic’s textured production and hypnotic grooves. A native New Yorker now based in Los Angeles, he produces music from a converted garage studio.

Monotronic’s 2019 debut earned acclaim from outlets such as Rolling Stone and Relix. The evolving collective has featured musicians connected to Daft Punk, Chic, Joe Jackson, and other notable artists. Their performances at prominent venues and festivals have built a reputation for vibrant energy, blending indie rock songwriting with electronic layers and global influences into a distinctive live experience.

The album Waiting for You marks a new stage in Elkholy’s creative journey, pairing introspective lyrics with expansive synth-driven soundscapes. Drummer Omar Hakim performed across the record, and bassist Mohini Dey appears on Close Enough. Multiple singles and music videos have premiered at number one on VEVO, with critics praising the cinematic scope and genre fluidity that define Monotronic’s evolving sound.
