Student and Nurse in Walnut Creek, California

I look forward to a career in healthcare. There are a lot of exciting new changes occurring in the healthcare industry as a result from the Affordable Healthcare Act of 2010. These changes are revolutionizing the healthcare industry. These new changes challenge the ways physicians practice medicine and how hospitals need to focus on quality improvement. In addition, hospitals now face new challenges with new laws that can potentially reduce their revenues. For instance, if a patient develops an ulcer or an infection while at the hospital, the government might not reimburse the hospital for that cost. Thus, it brings an extra cost to the hospital.

Where there are challenges, there is a need for solutions. This is where I see my career heading to. My dream job is in healthcare, in a position that would allow me to use the knowledge gathered from research and apply it to the hospital setting. There are consulting companies that analyze the work flow of a hospital, use the principles of Lean Six Sigma to understand the flow and then recommend changes for hospitals to try-out. There have been various studies in the use of "rounding on patients and staff" and the result has been that patient satisfaction was increased and the nurse retention rate increased. These are cost-effective tools that can easily be implemented with the use of a strong leadership.

Leadership within an organization can implement evidence-based practices to:
-reduce costs
-increase revenues
-increase patient satisfaction & recommendations
-increase marketability
-potential for local and national accreditation
