I am an architect and a Professor of Architecture at the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of Bahrain. I am a Fellow of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects and a member of the Society of Commonwealth Fellows, United Kingdom. I have previously been a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka (1992-2000), a Visiting Lecturer and an Architectural Critique at the Colombo School of Architecture (1995-2000), a Visiting Research Fellow of the University of Melbourne, Australia (2005) and a Visiting Professor of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
I studied architecture at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, Architecture and Behavior at the University of Surrey, UK and earned my PhD from the University of Newcastle, United Kingdom. I have also completed parts I and II of the Royal Institute of British Architects, (RIBA I & RIBA II) and have been in active practice while teaching, which began as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Newcastle, UK. from 1991-1992.
As an architect, I was the Proprietor of Design Concepts Architects (1998-2000), Managing Director of Gruhasta Architects (1997-1999), and also worked as a Senior Architect of Design Consortium Ltd (1993-1997), and Architect at Justin Samarasekara Associates Ltd. (1985-1988). My professional experience involves consultancy mainly for private agencies in Sri Lanka, Bahrain, Bangladesh and Australia, and managing design projects from inception through programming to completion. I have managed Luxury Personalized Houses, a Large Housing Estate, A Warehousing Complex for Tea Storage, a Tea Bagging Factory, a Distilleries Facility, a Hotel School, and a 7-storey Corporate Head Office from inception to completion.
Despite being in the academia, I continue to practice, designing small houses for the ordinary as well as the mansions for the exceptional. I have presented academic papers at international conferences from UK to Australia across disciplinary boundaries; from vernacular architecture to leisure places, and from architectural theory to migrant places. I have published in academic architecture journals, professional magazines and edited books as well as UN working papers.
It is great to be an architect and also be teaching. These are both wonderful professions, that enable me to serve people.
