Rational Middle

An innovation of filmmaker and writer Gregory Kallenberg, the Rational Middle Media Group uses documentary films to spark discussion about the energy challenges facing the world. Its name describes the meet-in-the-middle process that Kallenberg and his colleagues hope to inspire with their work; a collaborative discussion of the world's energy practices and possible sustainable solutions. Through a series of films, known as the Rational Middle Energy Series, the organization has created a forum that focuses on cooperation rather than divisiveness.
Following on the heels of Kallenberg's successful documentary "Haynesville: A Nation's Hunt for an Energy Future," the Rational Middle Energy Series looks at many aspects of modern energy use. Its most recent offering, "The Great Transition," examines the process of reaching a cleaner future. Choices that must be made are introduced, along with the conversations that accompany them, all leading to the end goal of sustainable energy for our society. "The Great Transition" follows on the success of such thought-provoking episodes as "A Day in the Life of Energy with the Corder Family," which monitors the energy use of a typical family of four. The Rational Middle Energy Series also includes a two-part installment on "Realities of Drilling," as well as interviews with the public on energy awareness, and an examination of what the world risks if current consumption continues without finding alternative sources.
Through these pieces, the Rational Middle Media Group intends to raise awareness of energy issues, inspire an attitude of community discussion, and bring people together with the goal of discovering new solutions. The Rational Middle has already begun to foster a collaborative environment with the creation of its website, rationalmiddle.com. The site hosts full episodes of the Energy Series as well as blog posts and instructions on how to start future-changing discussions among colleagues and with elected officials.
