Ravi Patel

Hi, my name is Ravi. I’m a student at the University of Guelph currently residing in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. I enjoy outdoor activities, learning to dance, cooking, and pushing myself to be fit. I also enjoy attending post-secondary school. Currently I am in my third year of working towards a Bachelor of Science with Biological Science as my declared major. This major has allowed me great flexibility in exploring various fields, such as ecology, evolution, and population medicine. The field that currently interests me the most though is the biomedical sciences. The biomedical science field explores a wide range of topics, including but not limited to, homeostasis, neural networks, diseases and disorders, and the functioning of different organs in the body. Frederick Banting, a Canadian physician, has contributed greatly to this field, and is someone who has inspired me greatly. In 1921 Banting, along with his associates, discovered and purified insulin. His actions have had a significant impact on the lives of those who suffer from diabetes. Similar to Banting, I hope to have a positive impact and make a difference in the lives of people who suffer from illnesses and disease.

In line with my aspirations to have a positive impact and make a difference, I am striving to be a paramedic. Paramedics are first responders with the large responsibility of ensuring the survival of the patient until they reach the hospital. In order to do this, character traits such as being calm, able to think in stressful situations and problem solve, and be physically fit are crucial. To be achieve my current career goal, I will have to attend an institution with a paramedicine program and continue my education for an additional two to three years after my undergrad. After this institution, there are various certifications I will need to have to practice paramedicine in Canada.

An interesting fact about me is that I also enjoy travelling. In the past few years, some of my favourite places to travel have been Cuba, the city of Salem and the city of Boston in Massachusetts, United States of America. This February I also plan on visiting the city of Reykjavik in Iceland.
