Raymond Evans
Raymond Evans is a native of Sydney, Australia, arriving there on 23 September 1934.
Raised in a small family that had just scraped through the Great Depression, Ray was brought up in modest circumstances, received a basic post-war education and went on to forge a managerial career in the manufacturing industry. Throughout his schooling and later career his strong writing skills became evident and much utilised. Along the way Ray gained qualifications in Personnel Management, OH & S and Training.
Writing always came easily to him, as if it was second nature, obviously inherited from his Welsh father Albert Evans, who loved history and who had researched and written a very entertaining collection of articles on the history of the Nepean area, now in the archives of the Penrith Municipal Library. Albert always said: “A good book is just like a friend talking to you,” and Ray has tried to embody that same feeling in his stories.
During his working years and later Ray travelled to many countries, always trying to understand what was important to the citizens in their various societies. He and his wife Irene moved to Port Macquarie and have been happily settled there since 1997.
A man of many interests, Ray eventually found his way back to writing when he joined a local U3A ‘Improve Your Writing’ course run by eminent poet Bessie Jennings, and with this group he was able to ‘open up’ and let the ideas flow. It wasn’t until he tried his hand at a short story that Ray recalled a life-long ambition: to become a writer of fiction.
Long a DIY person, Ray has learnt from scratch how to self-published his books, and being fortunate enough to have friends who are very good editors and proof readers.
Above all Ray likes to entertain readers and provide them with an opportunity to learn about something new.
