I am a leadoff hitter. My writing will always begin with the same goal: get things started. Once I determine a solid first idea, it leads to more and more. A team relies on its leadoff hitter to get on base. It is crucial that the at bat is a good one, for the first man in the lineup affects everything that comes afterwards. It is obvious that a team cannot hope to succeed without a good leadoff hitter. It is apparent to me that I cannot write without a good first idea. I build a piece of writing with one thought, and that one thought inspires the rest. Leadoff hitters have to be fast. Writing usually comes quickly to me; however, there is no sense in having speed if you can never get a hit. A strong first thought leads to strong writing, and a great leadoff hitter leads to a run, a win, and maybe even a championship.
