Ray Walshe
Assistant Professor in Ireland
Ray is an Assistant Professor at Dublin City University currently living in Ireland. Ray graduated with honours in Electronic Engineering from University of Limerick in Ireland and began his career in industry as a software engineer, software consultant and project manager with LM Ericsson, Software and Systems Engineering Limited and Siemens. Joining the lecturing staff in the School of Computing DCU in 1995 he delivers modules on the Cloud Computing and the Data Science Masters Programmes. Leadership roles included Theme Leader (Cloud Architecture) in the Cloud Computing Research Centre (IC4), Director of CloudCore Research Group and Principal Investigator on Enterprise Ireland/Science Foundation Ireland funded projects in partnership with Intel, Ericsson, PT Solutions and InishTech, and Chair of the Expert Advisory Group of EU Project StandICT.eu. Ray is a Funded Researcher at the Insight Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Data Analytics and a Funded Researcher in ADAPT Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Global Digital Content. Ray is Research Partner and Chair of the External Advisory Board of StandICT.eu and Co-Lead on ELITE-S Fellowship Programme for Emerging Technologies Standardization (Elite-Fellowships.eu). Ray’s current activities include Cloud Computing, Big Data and AI Standardization. Ray is a senior member of IEEE and was appointed to the Working Group IEEE European Public Policy Committee on ICT in 2019. He has won 3 Invent Project Awards for Industry Engagement and Ray is also Digital Leader with World Economic Forum (2018,2019,2020) and worked on the "Innovate Europe Competing for Global Innovation Leadership" Report launched at Davos 2019. His International Standards Organisation (ISO) work include NSAI National Expert on Cloud, Big Data and AI, NSAI National Head of Delegation for Big Data and ISO/IEC JTC1 SC42 Artificial Intelligence Standards Editor for WG2 Big Data Reference Architecture. Ray was the Guest Editor for the International Journal of ICT Standards – Special Issue on Big Data and AI Standardization (2020).
In February 2019 Ray was appointed Member of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Regulatory Cooperation and Standardization Policies and in May 2020 he was inited to the Editorial Board of the Journal of ICT Standardization.
