Raj Dhaliwal – Councillor for Ward 5, Calgary

Raj Dhaliwal is the Ward 5 councillor for Calgary, elected on October 18, 2021, taking over from George Chahal, who became the federal MP for Calgary Skyview. Representing the city's largest and fastest-growing ward, Raj advocates for safety, accessibility, economic growth and strong community cohesion.

As Ward 5 councillor, Raj leads a variety of major projects and city initiatives. These include securing funding for the $109 million Northeast Athletic Complex, boosting FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) funding—$30.1 million in 2023 and $40.1 million in 2024—and implementing a $15.8 million pavement rehabilitation program. His office is advancing key infrastructure efforts—such as widening Country Hills Boulevard, building the Airport Trail Traffic Congestion Mitigation Plan, expanding parks, pathways, gazebos and benches, and working on traffic safety and ride‑share transition strategies.

Councillor Dhaliwal sits on several boards and committees, including the Multisport Fieldhouse Committee, Community Development Committee, Calgary Police Commission, and the Calgary Stampede Board & Arts Commission. He has supported public safety efforts, enhanced tree canopy, and championed public art—as seen in the installation on the 64 Ave pedestrian bridge over Métis Trail—to strengthen neighbourhood identity and cultural expression in Ward 5 communities.

In recent Council activity, Raj has pressed for a resilient roofing rebate program to help homeowners recover from hail damage. He advocated before the Community Development Committee to implement recommendations like hail resilience mapping and grants for low-income residents—a response to the Fair Deal Panel recommendations regarding fiscal fairness for Alberta communities, though not a direct municipal referendum question.

Looking ahead to the City of Calgary council election 2025, Raj Dhaliwal is expected to appear among the Ward 5 councillor candidates Calgary will choose from. While not yet confirmed under a formal municipal party, he aligns with the conservative‑leaning values that emerged with Calgary’s new municipal parties—including contexts such as Calgary Skyview Conservative candidate interests and Fair Deal themes.
