Rea Mokone is the Founder and Director of OUTSIDE THE BOOTH (PTY) LTD, a creative social enterprise that uses artistic mediums to challenge narratives surrounding BIPOC and Queer communities. She is the Former Programme Manager of Free State Arts and Health (FSAH) and De Schrijvers-Werf and the Executive Producer of The Public Art Project, which are initiatives by the Vrystaat Kunstefees/Arts Festival.
She has focused her efforts on enlightening people about LGBTQI rights and social injustices in Africa. She has presented several guest lectures on gender equality and LGBTIQA+ rights in the African context. These guest lectures were for the post-graduate programme of Development Studies and for the Master's in Psychology at the University of the Free State.
In her role as Programme Manager of FSAH, she has developed community-curated art exhibitions and a 3D Virtual art gallery exhibition in Mozilla hubs for the Platfontein Print Project which was then featured in the international Ars Electronica Art Garden in 2020. She has worked within First Nation and indigenous communities and understands the importance of respecting and safeguarding secret and sacred knowledge.
She has been mentored by David Doyle, the Executive Director of DADAA Australia, the biggest Arts and Health/Arts in Disability organisation in Western Australia. In 2021, she became a fellow for the Global Arts in Medicine Fellowship and later became the Coordinator for the Southern African Alumni Group.
In 2023, Rea was appointed the CO-Curator, African-Lead for the Global South Art in Health Week (https://gsahw.com/our-team/), a creative health initiative led by an interdisciplinary team of students and professionals from Africa, Asia, the UK, Europe, and Latin America.
She is an experienced (and becoming) Creative, Producer, Manager and Social Activist who is passionate about using the arts as a medium to produce real societal shifts and real mental change.
