Rebekah Stewart

Atlanta, Georgia, United States

In August 2011, I began working for the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina facilitating a talented committee of high school aged youth as they organized, planned, and hosted events for youth of all ages. This position provided me with the opportunity to master skills as a delegator and catalyst for fresh ideas while offering training in team and leadership building, ropes course facilitation, as well as conflict resolution. Working with this organization ignited my enthusiasm for nonprofit work with youth, and inspired me to discover a variety of ways to apply my skills as musician to community outreach and youth administration.

In August of 2013 I have been serving with AmeriCorps as a Volunteer Manager/Program Coordinator at Oglethorpe University Center for Civic Engagement. My time there gave me the opportunity to fine tune my creative programming skills as well as increase my knowledge of recruitment tactics. My main responsibility at Oglethorpe was to civically engage college-aged students in the Atlanta community by planning and executing unique service opportunities on a citywide level. At Oglethorpe, I was charged with planning and implementing the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. During this process, I managed to recruit a record breaking number of volunteers to participate in the day’s activities.

While in this position, I also single-handedly revitalized student interest in the community garden by inspiring a group of students to form an official organization dedicated to maintaining, preserving, and advertising the garden. Working with AmeriCorps through Oglethorpe University has not only increased my foundational administrative skills as a non-profit professional, it has also helped me to
more clearly understand my gifts as a community builder and youth advocate.
