“Could I please just do this for you?”
A regional community foundation had $2.5 million in post-tornado donations—and a desire to allocate it in a way that respected and reflected the community’s needs. Transparency, efficiency and reduced burden on the potential grantee partners were top of mind. This would take more than just an extra set of hands; it would also require skilled expertise.
With decades of experience in leading global philanthropic initiatives, building partnerships and driving sustainable funding programs—in addition to being seasoned as a nonprofit board chair myself—I knew exactly what was needed. And I got to work.
The process included county-by-county research, key player assessment, and understanding issues such as housing, volunteer and case management, mental health, and food security. Prioritizing historically marginalized and underserved communities was essential. I made recommendations, fostered buy-in, interviewed grantee partners and received approval to award the grants. My key to success? First, I believe heartily in getting to “yes.” Second? I’ve worked in high-stakes situations for so long that I bring perspective, humor, and a “let’s-tackle-this-together” attitude.
Though that project in 2024 had a lot of moving parts, it was all related to grantmaking. That’s just one of the tools in my toolbox. I’m now in my second go-round as an independent philanthropic advisor. From 2008-2010, grantmaking was my main emphasis. I’ve since broadened my network, perspective and experience, and have added:
- Program creation, design and implementation
- Grant process development
- Fractional leadership expertise
- Partnership development
- Organizational design and growth
- Scenario planning to navigate uncertainty
- Board leadership and development
- Curriculum development and design
- Facilitation and workshop and panel development
- Executive search
- Keynote speaking
My journey has included work at the Center of Disaster Philanthropy, the Gates Foundation, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and Arabella Advisors, all while balancing a rich home life with my husband, daughters and pup, in addition to travel, hiking, cooking, reading and more.
