Rene Colon
Rene Colon is a seasoned photographer, editor, videographer, aspiring filmmaker, and an Operations Specialist for the US Coast Guard, serving as a first responder to all missions. A native of San Diego, CA, Rene is currently stationed in New York.
For years he’s been devoted equally to military and photography, fulltime, and, on occasion instinctively intertwines the two. His riveting photographs of him and his crew rescuing two Americans off the coast of Costa Rica, while aboard the USCGC Sherman, were published in the Nov. 2009 issue of Coast Guard Magazine.
Rene’s attention to detail, unique artistic eye, and astounding work ethic, are reasons why he’s earned opportunities to work with an array of top tier clientele. His burgeoning resume includes Ducati USA, Fletcher Jones Mercedes-Benz, rapper/actor Romeo, actor JC Jones (Glee), Beverly Hills men’s bespoke fashion designer Dion Julian, ESPN sportscaster Miles Simon, and a myriad of others who appreciate Rene's quality work.
His choice to begin serving his country, in 2005, was heavily influenced by family tradition. (Subsequently, his younger brother and cousin joined the Army.) Rene’s father retired from the Navy, his uncle was a US Marine, and his aunt was in the Air Force. On his mom's side, two uncles were members of the US Army, along with another pair of uncles who served in the Navy.
In 2006, while on tour of duty in SouthEast Asia Rene, whose primary passion early on was graphic arts, developed a new passion in landscape and portrait photography. Then, as he traversed Singapore, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Guam, Hawaii, and Central America, he captured images of interesting places, and the respective natives there.
In 2007, he began working with local San Diego talent helping build their portfolios with his stunning images. Through word of mouth and heavy networking, Rene’s work began garnering more attention. He soon found himself regularly commuting to Los Angeles to work. And in 2011, relocating to New York broadened his horizons and creative inspiration.
For Rene, the military and photography provide a balanced sense of fulfillment. Whether saving lives, or capturing life through his lens, Rene Colon places his heart and soul into his work, and it shows.
