Rhiannon Owen
If you'd have asked me two years ago what I would be doing with my life now, an Advertising & Marketing student would definitely not be the answer I would give. I also probably wouldn't say that I'd be a cheerleader for my University squad either but that's not quite so important! The advertising/marketing/publicity industries were never something I'd thought of as a career and yet here I am thriving on my course and on track for a first a the end of my fresher year.
I fell into the world of digital marketing as an Air Cadet when I decided my squadron wasn't getting many new recruits on open evenings because it didn't have a definite online presence. Off my own back I set about making a simple website for them as well as a Facebook & Twitter page and voila! Next induction evening there was a larger group of people and a lot more enquiries about about to join via the website contact page and via e-mail. I have since become fascinated with social media integration and it's importance in an organisation's marketing strategy and is something I continue to strive to gain experience in.
Exchanging my original plan of studying German at university in favour of persuing my interests has made me extremely content in my future career prospects, and I am already completing various voluntary placements to further feed my hunger of putting what I have learnt so far into practice. These positions include Publicist for the Coventry Cougar Cheer & Dance Squads and volunteering with the British Heart Foundation's Event Marketing Team.
