Richard Boulger
New York City
Richard Boulger is originally from North Adams, Massachusetts, where he was first introduced to the trumpet by his father who taught him early on the importance of "expressing one's heart and spirit" through the horn.
Richard attended the Hartt School of Music where he studied with alto saxophonist and jazz master Jackie McLean. Richard continued his formal education, earning a Master's degree in 1997 from Rutgers University, where he studied with trumpet "guru" Professor William Fielder. He continued his search for knowledge, and was a long-time private student of jazz trumpet icons Freddie Hubbard and Donald Byrd. Boulger has been equally committed to his development as a composer, studying extensively with contemporary composers, Roger Kiraly and Ludmila Ulehla.
In 1999, on the advice of Donald Byrd, Richard founded the b-1 Music label, on which he released The Calling, his debut album as a leader, "Blues Twilight," and most recently "Lookin Up."
In 2001, Richard joined Gregg Allman and Friends, touring extensively throughout the U.S.
He has since recorded and appeared with Grammy-nominated and award-winning artists, The Allman Brothers Band, "Joe", Randy Brecker, Little Louie Vega, as well as host of jazz luminaries including: John Hicks, Eddie Henderson, George Coleman, Victor Jones, Steve Davis, Dennis Irwin, Anthony Wonsey, and David Schnitter.
As a dedicated educator, having taught at the university level, Richard remains committed to ongoing work as a clinician and educator, working closely with students in over 25 New York City schools. Most recently, he joined the teaching staff at Lincoln Center's Middle School Jazz Academy. Richard is currently at work on his fourth major recording project as a composer, producer, and trumpeter which will feature new, original compositions, bringing more opportunity to explore globally-musical themes and sounds.
