Richard Alter is a self-made entrepreneur and investor. Ricahard was born in the Greater New York City area in June, 1979 and was raised by his father, Steven Alter, and mother, Jennifer Alter, along with his four other siblings; three older, one younger. Richard's family moved shortly after his younger brother's birth to Great Neck, Long Island where Richard spent his formative years. Richard grew up an accomplished athlete, raised to play football, baseball, and basketball, the latter of which he excelled at the most. He played on a middle school travel basketball league for St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Great Neck, where he started throughout the three years he played on the team. In the offseason, Richard would go to basketball clinics and camps, like Five Star Basketball camp, and received coaching tutelage from the likes of Herb Brown and other guest professional and semi-professional coaches. Richard attended Great Neck South High School, and played on the varsity basketball team starting his sophomore year. He had a fantastic career playing there, and when he graduated in 1997, he had numerous prospects to play Division I basketball. He ended up committing to play at Duke University. Richard started for the Blue Devils beginning his freshman year in college. He excelled with teammates like Shane Battier and Elton Brand, and was placed at the small forward position. However, during his second game Davidson University, he incurred a severe ACL tear in his right knee along with a stress fracture. The injury prevented him from playing basketball in college for the remainder of his time at Duke, after which he applied himself to more academic endeavors. Richard declared himself as a biochemistry major and went on to complete all of his pre-med requirements before the end of his junior year in college. He joined Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity in his sophomore year, and ended up becoming the vice-president of the fraternity elected board, where he instituted a number of community service initiatives, bringing the fraternity back from the brink of losing its charter due to lack of membership. After graduating in 2001 from Duke, Richard took a year off from college before attending medical school. He spent his time traveling around the country and seeing the beautiful natural landscapes of the United States.
