Simply put, Richard Chua is a cultural academic, with a specialized interest in performing arts, entertainment, specifically theatre. His travels to many different cities have benefited his research on the natures of small theatres in the region, from Singapore, to Malaysia, to Taiwan, to Hong Kong and China. As a Singaporean, his interest in small theatres in Southeast Asia -- especially Singapore and Malaysia -- has provided unique perspectives towards comparative analyses of small theatres in the two inter-related states, and other cities in the Chinese speaking regions in Asia. As a cultural worker, he has also been active in promoting entertainment as a cultural phenomenon through social media. His online magazine Theatrex Asia is a platform for such discourses to take place.
