Richard Hertle
Richard W. Hertle, MD, is an ophthalmologist with nearly 30 years of experience. Currently serving as Chief of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Director of the Children's Vision Center at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron in Ohio, Dr. Richard Hertle has held numerous hospital, administrative, and academic appointments during his long career.
For nearly 10 years, Dr. Richard Hertle taught ophthalmology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which is part of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine's Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Hertle then served as Medical Officer, Investigator, and Senior Scientist in Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, and Eye Movement Disorders at the National Institutes of Health. In addition, Dr. Richard Hertle served as Consultant in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Richard Hertle then worked briefly as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, Director of the Laboratory of Visual and Ocular Motor Physiology, and Director of the Pediatric Fellowship Program at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in Columbus. From 2004 to 2010, he served as Chief of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Hertle is currently a Professor of Surgery at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy.
In addition to his other experience, Dr. Richard Hertle has served as Attending Ophthalmologist at the Scheie Eye Institute and Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia. He was Partner in the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He also served as Staff Ophthalmologist and Consultant in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and the Portsmouth National Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. Dr. Hertle currently serves as Attending Staff Ophthalmologist at SUMMA Medical Center and Brecksville Surgery Center.
Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Richard Hertle is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and he is a Specialty Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
