Swing trading involves seeking out opportunities in stocks through technical analysis. This type of analysis reviews how supply and demand impact a security in terms of price trends and other patterns. Based on information gathered through analysis, swing traders accept trades that last from weeks to months to earn money on intermediate-term increases in the price of a stock.

While swing traders have the potential to collect on relatively short-term gains, they also risk the possibility that gaps in trading overnight or during a weekend may result in a sudden shift in price at the opening of the next session.

Day-trading, involves holding a financial instrument (stock, future, Forex) for seconds to minutes. It capitalizes on sudden large shifts in price and does not have to deal with the problems that can arise when holding a stock, overnight.
