Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Riley Keller is an Alto Saxophonist and composer who hails from Kitchener, Ontario, but currently resides in Toronto, Ontario. His interests lie predominantly in improvised music with various or even no structures. As a result of this, he is very interested in the jazz canon, from Be-Bop to the leading innovators of our day.

Riley is currently enrolled in the bachelor of music degree program at Humber College, where he has had the opportunity to study privately with some of the countries best saxophonists such as Johnny Griffin, Mark Promane, Shirantha Beddage and Nick Morgan. He is currently refining his abilities as an improviser while continuing to develop his own unique compositional voice. As a saxophonist he is influenced by masters like Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Patrick Panus, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, as well as current torch bearers Steve Lehman, David Binney, Will Vinson, Logan Richardson, Stuart Feenstra, Mark Shim, Chris Potter and Mark turner just to name a few. Compositionally, in addition to the saxophonists mentioned, Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey, Jonathan Finlayson and various classical musicians currently influence him.

As a saxophonist he has performed and recorded with notable acts such as one of Ontario’s premier progressive rock acts, Sound Glyphics and their various side projects, and currently he co-leads a quartet with the likes of such luminaries as Sean Dowhaniuk, Ethan Tilbury and Alfie Vinneau. This quartet is an entirely collaborative entity, in that while each member composes for the group, all of the material is developed and arranged collectively. He also had the immense honor of performing with the legendary Barry Harris and the great alto saxophonist Charles McPherson as a member of Toronto’s We Are One big band. Riley is also noted as a very dedicated practicer who frequently haunts the Humber practice rooms.
