Riria Rameka
Weaver in Waitakere Auckland, New Zealand
Kia ora,
I am forever inspired by my indigenous Māori cultural practises for the handcrafting of Harakeke 'flax of Aotearoa' appreciated in a variety of different ways according to it's design, colour and purpose.
Taonga tuku iho - knowledge handed down through generations of weavers, enables me the ability to shape its life force into an art form. The Harakeke lives on in my particular love for Hieke (rain cape) authentically crafted using both traditional and/or contemporary materials as a celebratory taonga to last through generations.
To further my knowledge and maintain integrity with an eagerness to share, I am enriched with learning by Veranoa Hetet and previously by inspirational talented weavers I have woven amongst including within the Hetet School of Māori Art.
I am of Ngapuhi descent living and weaving in West Auckland with my hoa tāne, three of my five children and also fortunate to have two mokopuna around me most weekends. I love gardening as a Kaitiakiwhenua - custodian of the land - involving maintenance of my small Pā Harakeke and gardens - a therapeutic connection for me with Papatuanuku, as is raranga.
