Reed Kohberger

Lieutenant Commander Reed Kohberger began his Coast Guard career in 1978 as a recruit at TRACEN Cape May, NJ. Upon graduation as the Company Honor Recruit he was assigned orders to the U. S. Navy Quartermaster School in Orlando FL where he finished 1st in his class.

He then served over five years of sea duty on three Coast Guard Cutters, sailing on the MALLOW out of Honolulu, HI, the BUTTONWOOD out of Galveston, TX and the IRONWOOD out of Kodiak, AK where he was awarded a permanent Cutterman's Pin.

His shore units include a tour in the Office of Navigation at Coast Guard Headquarters, and as the Emergency Response Operations Center supervisor at Group Port Angeles, WA and Marianas Section, Guam While at those units he won two nationwide awards for Coast Guard Search and Rescue Planner of the Year and was awarded a Surface Operations Pin.

Upon accepting a commission as a Chief Warrant Officer he entered the Marine Safety field, serving at the Marine Inspections Office New York, where he became a fully qualified Senior Marine Inspector. He also served in the Operations Preventions Division Baltimore, where he was the Passenger Vessel Branch Chief and responsible for regulatory oversight of all the passenger, commercial fishing, and towing vessels in the Mid-Atlantic States area.

He has served in the Coast Guard Headquarters' Office of Response where he was the Branch Chief, Response Policy Division and project manager for the Coast Guard's National Incident Management System and Incident Command System implementation plan. During this tour he volunteered and was assigned as the Coast Guard Liaison Officer for the Federal Agencies Emergency Response Operations.

His last billet was serving in the Office of Standards Evaluations and Development where he was a Regulatory Development Manager. He was also the project manager for the $500M Vessel Response Plans - Salvage and Marine Firefighting regulation.

His awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, a Joint Service Achievement Medal, four Coast Guard Achievement Medals and 23 other service medals and awards.

LCDR Kohberger has been awarded two Baccalaureate degrees while on active duty. He lives in Columbia, Maryland and currently does volunteer work for the local Meals on Wheels and various local and state Emergency Response and Disaster Preparation organizations.
