Phosphatidylethanol (PEth): A Biomarker for Alcohol Consumption
What is Phosphatidylethanol (PEth)?
Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a class of phospholipids formed exclusively in the presence of ethanol (alcohol) in the body. Unlike other biomarkers that indicate alcohol consumption, PEth provides a more direct and long-lasting measure of alcohol intake. It is synthesized in cell membranes when ethanol interacts with phosphatidylcholine under the catalytic action of the enzyme phospholipase D.
