Robert Beatty is a pioneering member of the first wave of Theravada Buddhist teachers who introduced Insight Meditation and Mindfulness practices from Asia in the 1970s. His approach to teaching focuses on meeting individuals where they are in their journey, blending traditional Buddhist practices with Western psychotherapy. Over the years, he has worked with thousands of students, helping them incorporate Buddhist teachings into their everyday lives. His method combines meditation, humor, music, poetry, and movement to address life's challenges, encouraging an open-hearted and compassionate approach to joy and suffering.

Throughout his life, he has learned from several influential teachers who have played an essential role in shaping his approach to meditation and mindfulness. He studied with a teacher for over four decades, eventually receiving authorization to teach within the Burmese Buddhist tradition in 1982. In addition, Robert studied non-dual spirituality and received novice ordination in Burma. His practice continued in India, where he worked with various teachers who further influenced his teachings.

After earning his BSc in Psychology and Chemistry from McGill University, Robert embarked on a journey of self-discovery, traveling to various countries, including Australia and Switzerland. His life took a turning point in 1972 when he participated in a Buddhist meditation retreat, which led him to ordain as a monk in India. Unfortunately, he could not continue on that path due to health reasons and returned to Canada. This period of his life ignited a strong interest in integrating Western psychotherapy with Buddhist meditation, which would become a central aspect of his work.

Upon returning to Canada, Robert pursued a Master's in Environmental Studies, focusing on the relationship between humans and the natural world. During his studies, he also encountered Western psychotherapy, which profoundly influenced his approach to meditation. His work focused on understanding how humans impact the environment and how people can live in harmony with nature and one another.

In 1979, Robert moved to Portland, Oregon, where he earned his Master of Social Work degree. He worked in addiction treatment and later moved to hospice care, helping individuals and families navigate the challenges of illness and the end of life.
