Dr. Robert Sewers
I am a physician and pediatrician devoted to seeing universal health care for all Americans, of which ObamaCare is only the first step. My thoughts more in full:
Many people are wondering, "Why health care reform? Is it ne What exactly are the reasons for reform?" Here are some fast statistics on why health care change can't wait.
The United States ranks 38th out of 191 by the World Health Organization for life expectancy.
Fifteen percent of U.S. citizens have no health insurance.
Medical debt contributes to 62% of personal bankruptcies in the United States.
The new healthcare reform law will prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage because of a person's medical history.
And then there are those denied insurance entirely: Reuters reported yesterday pointed to an insurance company practice that's so awful, it's almost hard to believe. Reporter Murray Waas explained that WellPoint apparently developed a policy of targeting customers with breast cancer, and then launching fraud investigations against them so their coverage could be dropped. Once they lost their insurance, many went without care-- Waas reports-- and some even died.
