Ronald Stewart has served as Headmaster of York Preparatory School in Manhattan since he founded the school with his wife, Jayme, in 1969. Mr. Stewart currently oversees a student body of 350, with a faculty and administration of more than 70 educational professionals. 100% of York Prep’s graduating classes are accepted into college, with more than 85% successful with their top choice.

Under Mr. Stewart’s guidance, York Prep has flourished and built a reputation as one of the private school jewels in the New York City education panorama. Now entering his 45th year at York Prep, Mr. Stewart continues to be an active and engaged headmaster.

Having met and worked for a number of years together at Tripp Lake Camp in Maine, the Stewarts dreamed of establishing a school to help students achieve personal success while upholding academic excellence. York Prep opened its doors in September 1969 to 158 students. Originally located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, York Prep moved to its current home at West 68th Street on the Upper West Side in 1997. Mrs. Stewart continues a prominent role at the school serving as its Head of College Guidance.

Prior to founding York Prep, Mr. Stewart practiced law in London. In 1968/69 he was Counsel in one of the longest trials in England since 1945. Mr. Stewart won an open scholarship to Wadham College, Oxford University, graduating with a B.A. in 1965, a B.C.L. in 1966, and an M.A. in 1969. He won a Harmsworth Pupillage Award at the Middle Temple in London where he was called to the Bar in 1966.

Mr. Stewart currently serves on the Executive Committee of Weill Cornell Hospital, the Education Update Advisory Council, and has been a regular speaker at the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University. Mr. Stewart was a past president of the East Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, and for many years the Assistant Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals in North Salem, New York.
