Chris Ross

In May of 2008 I marched across Fischer Field and accepted a diploma symbolizing thirteen of the most important years that shaped who I had become. Looking at the smiling faces all around me, the people who had brought me to this point, I closed the door on my chapter with USD 373. Five years later, the passion and pride that carried me across that stage has led me back home in preparation of beginning a new chapter.

As important to me as my years in the Newton School District were, it is the last five years that have taught me how special they were. I have quickly learned that the direction our school systems are heading is a dangerous one. We're entering a world where students are nothing more than test scores and hard work is overrated. This is NOT the kind of education that you and I received and it is not the education that the next generation deserves.

How could a young person barely out of school possibly benefit our school district? The better question is, how could the views of a passionate young graduate of USD 373 NOT benefit our school district? I hold nothing but the utmost respect for every incumbent member of the USD 373 School Board, but I hold an invaluable tool that none of them can claim. I understand what it is to be a student in the 21st Century and what it will take to ensure that the new generation is the most successful one yet.

As a member of the Newton School Board I will dedicate myself to a 7-point plan to enable our students to thrive.

1. Create new opportunities for all students inside of the classroom and out.

2. Unite Newton through pride and involvement in the lives of our students.

3. Fight for the resources that teachers need to have the impact they desire.

4. Decrease standardized requirements and allow every child to learn in methods that help them to best succeed.

5. Smarter use of funds to maximize education without raising taxes.

6. Openness to innovative ideas that reform and improve education.

7. Develop an environment where every child enjoys school and values their education.

On April 2nd, 2013 I respectfully ask for your vote so that together we can create "The Voice of Education for the New Generation".
