He is currently writing a dissertation on the relationship between religious practice, law, and politics in early national Virginia and Maryland. Other scholarly interests include Virginia history, gender history, and the political and cultural history of American Christianity from the American Revolution to the American Civil War.

Roy is a founding contributor to "The Junto: A Group Blog on Early American History" and a regular voice on its podcast.

Roy is well-known as a cat person. He is also a (semi-)reformed comic book fanboy.
