Born in Alexandria, Louisiana, on June 19, 1948, Shelton grew up at Camp Beauregard, was in the first class at Paradise Elementary,and was graduated from Tioga High. At Tioga, he was a member of Future Christian Leaders of America, Beta Club, Science Club, Track, Basketball, and Baseball. A four year starter in Varsity Baseball, Shelton was selected all district in 1965 and in 1966 was honored as all state baseball where he maintained the second highest batting average as first baseman. Shelton had the opportunity to play baseball at Northwestern State University, but chose to attend the University of Louisiana at Monroe where he received a BS degree in Pharmacy and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In 1970 Shelton was married to Deanna Kay McDonald of Alexandria, Louisiana, a graduate of LSU Baton Rouge. Upon his graduation, he began working for Rapides General Hospital in Alexandria, Louisiana where he was born. His preparation included work at five hospitals prior to graduation. Shelton transferred to USAF Reserves at England Air Force Base and was later honorably discharged. By 1972, Shelton had joined Pinecrest State Hospital as Director of Pharmacy and Ancillary Services. In 1980, Shelton was elected President of the Louisiana Society of Hospital Pharmacists who awarded him Pharmacist of the Year in 1981. He founded and was elected the first President of the Central Louisiana Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Shelton served terms in the House of Delegate of the American Society of Health system Pharmacists, ASHP Committee on Nominations, and ASHP Council on Legal Affairs. By 1985, Shelton was named Executive Director of The Rehabilitation of Rapides Parish, Inc. In 1989, he began work as Field Manager for Owen Healthcare, Inc. of Houston, Texas. Licensed as pharmacist in 16 states, Shelton went on to work in 26 states over more than forty years. His employers included Cardinal Health, McBride Health system Associates, Advocate Rx Solutions, and Project Rx, Inc. Shelton is father to Shelley Kay McBride Willetts (b. 1972) and Jessica Leigh McBride (b. 1975). Among his greatest sources of pride are his grandchildren, Benjamin Cooper Willetts, competitive swimmer, and Harper Camille Willetts, lover of the arts. Throughout his life, Shelton has been an active member of various organizations including the Pineville Kiwanis Club, the Alexandria Rotary Club, Kingsville Baptist Church, and Pineville Park Baptist Church.
