Dr. Rooney is a fellowship trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon. He is double board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

He was an All-Army athlete at the United States Military Academy and then attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. After medical school, he completed his Surgical and Orthopaedic training in the Army and a Spinal Deformity Fellowship with Behrooz Akbarnia at UC San Diego.

Among his most note worthy awards while in practice in the Army; he was selected as the Clinical Traveling Fellow by the Scoliosis Research Society, the North American Spine Society and the Cervical Spine Research Society. He is the only surgeon to ever win all three of these awards. He is also one of the rare Orthopaedic Surgeons to become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He had one of the most distinguished Military Orthopaedic Surgical Careers and his military career culminated with a Bronze Star nomination for his performance while deployed in Iraq during the 2007 troop surge. As a result of his expertise and experience he was chosen to author the chapter, Spine Injuries, as well as the chapter, Extremity Injuries and Open Fractures, in the text Front Line Surgery, the definitive textbook on combat surgery by American military surgeons.

Congress recognized his skill and accomplishments and he was appointed as a Peer Reviewer for Congressional Directed Medical Research Programs in 2009 and 2011 in the fields of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy in Orthopaedics.

After leaving the Army in 2010, he joined The Polyclinic in Seattle and was recognized as a ‘Seattle Superdoctor’ in 2011, 2012 and 2013. At the end of 2012, he left The Polyclinic to go into Private Practice. His extensive involvement in research and development has lead to his position as the Chief Commercial Officer for Celling Biosciences.
