Most of li-ion batteries cathode is graphite, when a lithium-ionbattery is recharged, under the action of electric field, li-ions will move to the surface of graphite particles, the speed is determined by the charging current.

LiFePO4 Battery

The li-ion receives electrons on the graphite surface and diffuses to the inner layer of the graphite particles, the maximum speed of diffusion is determined by the graphite structure and temperature.

When the charging current is too high or the temperature is too low,the migration of li-ions to the surface of graphite particles is faster than the diffusion of lithium to the inner layer of graphite particles, this time will be on the surface of graphite particles deposit metal lithium.

Lithium metal is very unstable and will react with the organic solvent in the electrolyte, the amount of active lithium in the battery will be reduced, which means the battery capacity will be reduced.

LiFePO4Battery can be fast charged from 5°C to 45°C (41 to 113°F).

Below 5°C, the charge current should be reduced, and no charging is permitted at freezing temperatures because of the reduced diffusion rates on the anode.

During charge, the internal cell resistance causes a slight temperature rise that compensates for some of the cold.

The internal resistance of all batteries rises when cold, prolonging charge times noticeably.

It is important to add the low & high temperature cut-off functions on the BatteryManagementSystem, for protecting your battery pack.
