Hello, I’m Ryan.

I’m a physics student at the University of Guelph with a passion for astronomy, radiation and their effects on the environment. I have an interest in all science, although physics is my preferred area of study. I am a co-op student that has had the privilege to do an 8-mouth position at Triumf, which is a nuclear and particle physics laboratory in Vancouver, British Columbia.

At Triumf I did research and experiments in the detection of gammy-rays, in order to improve the efficiency of the detection equipment. I also got to work with some of the technicians to design and build different apparatuses for some of the larger experiments, as well as assist in upgrading some of the equipment and systems.

I believe that a career in science communication would be very enjoyable. I fell in love with teaching and tutoring from my time as a swim instructor where I was able to practice my presentation skills, even though I still have a bit of stage fright presenting in front of my peers. I am a very big fan of the discovery, or interactive, method of learning and a firm believer you are never too old nor too smart to learn something new. Education is the cure to ignorance and is something to be fully embraced, as long as the knowledge taught is correct.

The person that inspired me to pursue an education in physics was my mother. She was a Chemist at Nortel Networks, and a Health and Safety Adviser for both Weston and Algonquin Power. As my mother has always been interested and enthusiastic about science, she nurtured both my sister’s and my intrigue from a young age.

I am a fan of technology, travel, and fitness. I’m interested in hiking, scuba diving, snowboarding and riding my motorcycle. In British Columbia, during my spare time, I was able to venture the landscapes and bask in the beauty of the crystal blue lakes, jagged peeks, incredibly tall trees, and awe-inspiring glaciers of the Rocky Mountains. I am usually working on a design project; currently I am building a bicycle powered generator to demonstrate how mechanical energy can be converted into electrical energy. This particular project is being built for the Physics Club at the University of Guelph, and will be revealed at College Royal 2019. Some of my previous projects were in carpentry. I have designed and built a wine rack, a night stand, and a snake terrarium.
