Rebecca Eisenberg
Editor, Consultant, and Writer in Baltimore, Maryland
Hi, I’m Rebecca. I’m a digital editor and leader with a passion for connecting audiences to stories that matter to them.
In 2010, I graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Film and Video studies. More importantly, I was also the Editor in Chief of Phroth, the university’s century-old humor magazine. It was my work launching the magazine’s digital presence that lead to my first job out of college, an internship at a small startup called BuzzFeed. As one of the top ten users regularly drawing traffic to BuzzFeed, it was there that I truly began honing my skills creating optimized content for the social media era. After leaving BuzzFeed, I worked at a web video production company, learning the ins and outs of web video optimization. In my spare time, I launched a (now dormant) Tumblr blog chronicling lesser known early roles of celebrities which had over 250k followers and was named one of BuzzFeed’s 90 Best Tumblr Blogs of 2011.
In 2012, I began work at Upworthy, an innovative and newly launched mission-driven media company. I was promoted five times in five and a half years as we scaled up, leading a distributed team that drove more than 600 million readers to stories on subjects such as feminism, the environment, politics, body positivity, social justice, pop culture, and more. Beyond my capacity as a story editor, I also created response plans for breaking news, directed live event coverage, facilitated cross-team collaborations, lead pitch meetings, and onboarded and trained new writers and editors, all while working remotely.
I am a passionate, creative, quick-thinking, and organized editorial leader. I’m also a nerd, a feminist, and a pop culture nut who loves making people laugh and believes firmly in the power of empathy and media to make the world a better place. I love the internet in all its glory and despite all its failings.
When I’m not working you can find me in the kitchen making my own bread and cheese, at the movies watching the latest blockbuster, exploring my local farmer’s market, or obsessing over my favorite TV shows on the Internet.
