For 20 years, disruptive curriculum innovationguides Steve's practice. He started teaching as a mountain guide and spent two decades translating all he learned as a guide into his literature classes. He focused his interests on Postcolonial literature and identity theory.
In 2007, students in his English class inspired him to develop a STEAM curriculum called "the Greengineers." As a learning project, the Greengineers program leads the country in curriculum innovation. The program is a collaborative think-tank that integrates Design, Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, Economics, Finance, Activist Art, and Industrial Safety. Steve and his team lead the students through research covering biodiesel, recycled plastics engineering, algae as fuel, mycelium. The curriculum innovation hinges on the creation and implementation of "Solution-Centered Learning with Student-Centered Solutions."
Under Steve's leadership, the success of the Greengineers led to the creation of the Office of Ingenuity, an educational design studio. The Office of Ingenuity is a conceptual and physical studio that helps learning communities Discover, Design, Deliver (aka 3D Learning) active innovations in education and foster dynamic relationships between public education, universities, and community. We access and employ community expertise, acumen, and ingenuity at the same time as we harness the innovation, exploration, and brilliant ideas of our best students and most innovative faculty.
Our mission is to create ecosystems of opportunity driven by these Design Principles
- facilitate ambiguity (there’s no learning without uncertainty)
- entertain the fantastic (learning is an experience of wow and awe)
- find or build the bridge (integrate to innovate and relationships will connect us to the greatest good)
- observe and embrace anomaly (solutions depend on perspective, perspectives reveal the possible)
Learning has no Limit
