For the last twenty-six years, S.J. Jung has been a passionate advocate for the community, fighting for policies supporting the most vulnerable New Yorkers, including low and middle income families, immigrant New Yorkers, seniors and youth. S.J. has also been building bridges with diverse communities to enhance racial and ethnic harmony.

S.J. has been an outspoken leader in the fight against the budget cuts and advocating for a fair budget that preserves basic services for struggling families during tough economic times. As a member of the Steering Committee of the One New York Coalition: Fighting for Fairness, made up of key leaders from the education, labor, and health and human service sectors, SJ has fought against City and State budget cuts made on the backs of working women and men, immigrants, the poor, the disabled, senior citizens and others in need.

In 2009, S.J. shook up the Queens political scene with an impressive campaign for New York City Council, winning a wide range of endorsements, including The New York Times, the Daily News, El Diario, the Working Families Party, Citizens Union, the NY League of Conservation Voters and major unions such as SEIU 32 BJ and DC 37. He fell short of winning the Democratic nomination by a slim margin, but is now widely regarded as one of Queens’ most active and unifying community and political leaders. In 2010, S.J. was elected District Leader in the Flushing area with overwhelming support.

S.J. was awarded the 2011 American Dreamer Award by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the Commendation by Comptroller John Liu in 2013, the Caring for Children Award by the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families in 2007, the Person of the Year by the Korea Daily in 2011, and the Community Service Award from the Democratic Organization of Flushing in 2013.
