Saim Mehmood
AI Engineer in Hamilton, ON
I'm a passionate Data Engineer and Machine Learning practitioner based in Hamilton, Ontario, with a love for turning complex data challenges into elegant, impactful solutions.
What I Do
Most recently I was working as a Data Engineer at Harris Computer, where I design sophisticated ETL pipelines that transform raw customer and meter data into actionable insights for utility companies. My work directly impacts operational efficiency - I've helped reduce utility losses by 10-20% through advanced analytics modules for leak detection and transformer load analysis. I also contributed to the development of proprietary LLM-based analytics that extend meter data management capabilities.
Previously, I spent time as an MLOps Engineer at Badal.io, where I built end-to-end machine learning solutions on Google Cloud Platform, specializing in financial applications and bias detection in appraisal documents using semantic models and Document AI.
My Background
I hold an MSc in Computer Science from York University, where I specialized in data mining and machine learning. During my graduate studies, I conducted research in trajectory data mining—essentially understanding human movement patterns through GPS data—which led to a publication at the IEEE Mobile Data Management Conference 2020. I was honored to receive the Best Paper Award for this work.
My journey in tech started with a BSc in Software Engineering from the University of the Punjab, and I've been fortunate to experience diverse learning environments, including an exchange semester at Uppsala University in Sweden through the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.
Beyond the Day Job
I'm deeply committed to giving back to the tech community. As a Data Science Mentor at SharpestMinds, I guide individuals making the transition into data science, helping them navigate the complexities of breaking into this exciting field. I've also contributed as a Research Fellow at Aggregate Intellect, open-sourcing NLP packages to benefit the broader tech community.
Teaching has always been close to my heart—I spent several years as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at York University, helping students master everything from mobile programming to database systems.
What Drives Me
I'm fascinated by the potential of data and AI to solve real-world problems. Whether it's optimizing utility operations, detecting bias in financial documents, or helping the next generation of data scientists find their path, I believe in the power of technology to create meaningful change.
When I'm not coding or mentoring, you'll find me exploring the latest developments in machine learning, contributing to open-source projects, or working on side projects that push the boundaries of what's possible with data.
