Salmaan A. Rizvi

I am currently a senior at Cornell University, studying Materials Science and Engineering in Cornell's College of Engineering. My interests include technology, business and sustainability. As an engineer, I feel I have the potential, and option, to devote my strengths to all of these fields. I recently interned as a consultant and proposal development assistant with Centurion Technology. Here, I researched, wrote, and edited proposals for small business applying for research grants from the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DoE), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Health (NIH) as well as many others. Work included researching current similar technologies, analyzing current market size and trends and producing cohesive, compelling technical reports.

In addition to this internship, I've done extensive research in fields of sustainable energy and ferroelectrics. At the Cornell Center for Sustainability Research, I worked on developing various ionic liquids to be used as new and novel electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries and studied their possible application in solar cells. Further, these ionic liquids have been shown to have excessive carbon dioxide sequestering abilities, creating a new opportunity for reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

I am currently conducting research at the Cornell Center for Materials Research on complex structures having "super-lattices." These materials are being produced as thin-films via an advanced deposition technique called Molecular Beam Epitaxy. Molecular beam epitaxy can be simply and easily described as atomic spray painting, where control over the atomic layers of crystal lattice are controllable and tunable.

More about myself as a person: I'm very active, playing ultimate frisbee on Cornell's Ultimate team in the spring, summer and fall, and snowboarding in the winter. I enjoy photography, especially landscape, wildlife and time-lapse photography. I'm an inquisitive, eager learner, very outgoing and easy to communicate with. I consider myself to be a funny and generous person, always looking make other people laugh. I currently hold positions of rank in Cornell Hunger Relief, the largest food relief drive at Cornell, and Cornell Ultimate.

Thanks for looking, and don't hesitate to contact me!
