I used to drive home from school on the south side of town just to see that expanse of sky open up above the airport. For some reason I always drew inspiration from it. It was perpetually in motion and often lent itself to a light show more spectacular than any Fourth of July fireworks. I’m not sure I will ever fully understand why I found that little airport so stirring, but it always provided me with a sense of belonging on this planet. It was as if I could just stare straight into the heavens, and know that no other worldly strife would keep me from attaining happiness. Those thoughts often kept me afloat as I drifted through the uncertain waters of my small, fine arts high school. In a town known internationally for its prestigious golf tournament, it always seemed as though everybody who called it home couldn’t wait to evacuate as rapidly as the golf fans flooded in. So as I become a part of the mass exodus of young adults traveling far and wide to pursue an education of a higher degree, I can’t help but hope that what lies ahead is much more than just a change of scenery. And I feel as though that hope is founded upon the overwhelming belief that this University of Georgia is where I belong. Besides, there is plenty of open sky around here.
