working on my family documentary 'from Black Market'
the camera was like a sibling i never have, gave me the courage to come home and face my dad again after 5-6 years away from Vietnam and the house with 30 years of physical and mental abuse. 10 years ago when i first started filming my mum, i thought of her as the victim only. now i have learned that my dad is also a victim of history, politics, culture and my parents’ lack of communication skills and compatibilities for each other
i also asked my dad to film my mum without talking (or arguing with her in reality) when she wakes up at 4am in the morning to prepare for her food stall, when he normally still sleeps – this results in romantic moments they have never shared before. the footage also shows how he views her through the camera angle and focus and could be edited together with what i filmed, the sound recordings of my talks with my relatives
