Hi, I’m Sam Smith. I recently defended my Ph.D. dissertation in Biochemistry and Structural Biology at the UAB Graduate School of Biomedical Science in Birmingham, Alabama.

I work on metabolic dysregulation in IPF and ARDS under the mentorship of Jarek Zmijewski, Ph.D., and Victor Thannickal, M.D. My project focuses specifically on the key metabolic enzyme ACLY and its role in fibrotic lung disease and the molecular mechanisms of aging. I am also leading a study in metabolomic dysregulation in severe trauma and immunosuppression. In the future, I hope to explore how the global metabolome changes in aging and disease, to better understand which key regulators may serve as potential therapeutic targets.

I like to recharge through scuba diving, backpacking, kayaking, DIY PC building, cocktail mixology, and international travel.
