Sangeeta Shastry

Kansas City, Missouri, United States

I’m Sangeeta Shastry, and I’m a journalist with a background in news writing and online production. My newest projects are taking me into the world of radio reporting and multimedia production, which I couldn’t be more excited about.

I’m currently a master’s student at the University of Missouri-Columbia studying journalism, law and conflict resolution and gaining experience with other types of media I didn’t work with as an undergraduate. In May 2012, I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science.

I found another passion in the legal system early on in college. I interned with the Midwestern Innocence Project for two years and was able to assist with the case of Dale Helmig, who was convicted of his mother’s murder in 1993. The case was officially dismissed Aug. 14, 2011.

Most recently, I spent this past summer at KCUR 89.3 FM, Kansas City’s NPR affiliate. Having never worked in public radio, I learned so much about producing live shows from start to finish. I also had the chance to produce a few radio pieces of my own.

I spent time in this city last year, too, as a reporter for the The Kansas City Star covering local and state news, business news, sports and features for the paper, the website and the Star’s 913 Magazine for Johnson County, Kan., readers.

I’ve worked in the Brussels bureau of Thomson Reuters as an editorial intern and was lucky enough to be allowed to enterprise my own stories. My bylines appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, BBC, NPR and The Huffington Post. (All of those are PDF downloads.)

As a student, I was a reporter for the Columbia Missourian, one of Columbia’s daily city newspapers, and I’ve been an assistant city editor and a copy editor there as well.

I’ve tried to dabble in other aspects of communication — I’ve worked as a development and public relations intern with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, which combined my love of classical music and let me dive headfirst into communications that didn’t involve lede writing. As a high school student, singing with the St. Louis Children’s Choirs took me to Los Angeles, Sydney, Melbourne and New York City to sing with the St. Louis Symphony at Carnegie Hall in 2005.
