Sarah Ater

Mediator and Coach in Kenya

I am a mediator and conservation coach. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Development Studies researching conflict in fisheries. I am drawn to people and drawn to the ocean and thus naturally absorbed in blue leadership and ocean literacy. I am passionate about diversity and inclusion, creating safe spaces for people to engage.

My experiences span from sustainability education to conflict transformation; from teaching at university to teaching in kindergarten; from research work to business management making my life truly transdisciplinary. A natural brisk walker, I have paced my long and winding path stopping from time to time to reflect on my purpose and pay attention to the beautiful tapestry of my different experiences. I enjoy using words to paint images, helping people to find common ground and strengthen bonds by listening deeply and actively.

I am proficient in facilitation and training; conflict transformation and science communication. I am a member of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA); the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) and the Conservation Coaches Network (CCNet). I serve as the Women in Marine Science (WiMS) Kenya representative and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Board Member on the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) Marine Program.

I dream and work towards harmony among people and with nature. Together, we can make a difference.
