Sarah Figueiredo
Amherst, Massachusetts
Hello!
My name is Sarah Figueiredo and I would like to tell you a little about myself and my passions.
I am currently a junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the Isenberg School of Management persuing my bachelors in business administration degree in marketing. I am from North Attleboro, MA (just 20 minutes from Gillette Stadium).
Here at UMass I have discovered my real passion. My sophomore year, a friend told me about a club on campus called Sisters on the Runway. I thought it sounded cool since I love fashion and follow trends religiously, but little did I know that interviewing with the presidents of the club that day would lead me to where I am today. Co-President of the Sisters on the Runway- Umass Division registered student organization.
Sisters on the Runway is a national organization that raises money and awareness for domestic violence. Becoming a part of an organization that gives back to the community while involving an industry that I want to eventually work in is the perfect fit for me and it has helped me realize how important an issue domestic violence is. I have become passionate about spreading awareness about domestic violence and my efforts to raise money for the cause have helped our local women's shelter in Northampton, Safe Passage, to help people who are in dangerous relationships to get out of them and give them shelter while they are getting back on their feet.
I never knew how much Sisters on the Runway really helped students on my campus until the director of Safe Passage told me that they have gotten calls from women who had heard about Safe Passage through Sisters on the Runway and were able to get away from their dangerous situations. The fact that an organization that I was involved with made such a difference, and may have even saved lives, blew my mind and is the reason why I strive to raise domestic violence awareness today.
Since I have a passion for fashion, as they say, the fact that Sisters on the Runway hosts an annual benefit fashion show each spring lets me express my creative side. As a fashion director last year, I worked with sponsors such as J.C Penny and Hale Bob as well as small boutiques. I would eventually like to work in fashion merchandising so these sponsorship experiences have given me some insight to the fashion industry.
