I am an old car. Putting the key into the ignition is like having the topic planted into my brain by a teacher, it gets me thinking and I immediately know what direction I want to go in. Before you can drive away, you need to start the car. Old cars often need to be 'revved' multiple times before they are strong enough to get going, but on some days you have no problems starting up your old car. As a writer, I instantly know where my piece will be going and how it will end, but how it will start is a different story. It is much harder for me to write the opening paragraph than any other equally important part, yet occasionally I have no trouble starting my paper. When my beginning is perfect though, the rest of my thoughts flow straight onto the page. The flowing of my thoughts and opinions can be closely compared to the old clunker chugging down the road in the direction it knew all along as if it were a new, undamaged car. Writing for me is a process; much like starting and driving a clunker.
