Sarah Packer (°1991, Plymouth, United Kingdom) is an artist who work within the realm of photography. Her main interest, however, lies in curation and collaboration. The coming together of artist and designer to find new ways to present work to an ever changing audience, whether that is through a publication or display.
Within her photography she focuses on the idea of private to public display and more specifically on spaces where anyone can see the work and provide instant interpretation: the non-private space holding private imagery is investigated in her latest work ‘The Boys Who Could Fly’.
The Boys Who Could Fly is a collaborative project with her two younger brothers, Mark (18yrs old) and Jack (15yrs old), they are both the subject of her photography but also participants in the process. Taking their own photographs and providing an alternative perspective to the photographer and giving a contrast to her own imagery.
Sarah’s work is based on everyday situations: visions that reflect a sensation of indisputability and serene contemplation, combined with subtle details of odd or eccentric, humoristic elements that can arise in photography that focuses on youth. Inspired by the work of Nan Goldin and Ray Billingham, she seeks to ascertain the truth in a society that is visually saturated with constructed, photoshopped imagery. She photographs using the instant medium of an Instax camera, as well as 35mm and medium format work. This provides a combination of both instant snapshot moments and also those that are more studied and scientific.
Sarah has been a finalist in The Signature Art Prize 2012, shortlisted for the Magnum Photos/Ideas Tap Award: Family Portrait in February 2014 and her work has been featured in various online publications.
She is also interested in Graphic Design and has created several publications which has allowed her to explore that interest with a lot of creative freedom.
