Sarah Tomlin
Hey, my name is Sarah Tomlin. Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina I grew up in a loving family which consists of my mother and father, older brother, and two younger sisters. Living for nineteen years in the same southern town I was in for quite the shock when moving to a large public state school with a majority of the student body coming from the state of Georgia. When choosing to attend The University of Georgia I was going against the regular choice of attending The University of Chapel Hill, hoping to get away from what I had already lived for nineteen years. I wanted to experience something new, different and unique to what I had already lived; and what better time to do this than college? Little did I know I would be jumping into the same situation but instead of being inside this bubble, I am now on the outside, trying to get back inside. I don’t want to sound as though my college experience has been compromised for this reason, instead I want to convey how I am navigating in this new world I was thrown into this semester as a new outsider who had been an insider for most of my life. I am not used to not knowing everyone around me or having familiar faces at every corner. This semester I have learned how to let others get to know me when they have little to no prior impressions. It has been a great semester learning who I am, who I want to be, and who strive to be on a daily basis. This English 1102 has given me the opportunity to delve further into this idea of being an outsider both in my personal life as well as the many characters in our studies of poems, short stories, and Hamlet.
