Sarah Doughty
I was born in Toronto. Grew up in Muskoka, and live in Ottawa.
I was accepted at Carleton University for Law but quickly switched to Political Science because it's hard to be passionate about classic tort law, and very addicting to study politics on the international stage. I wanted to do something that impacted people's lives on a large scale. I wanted to make this world better. Fast forward a few years, and I was in the same situation many of the candidates I work with today face. Lots of education, tons of ambition, but no jobs to apply for.
Funny enough, I actually found a job that impacts lives daily, but on the smaller scale. I fell ass backwards into technical recruiting and took an unpaid internship to try to build a career. I have never looked back. A professional busy-body, with match-maker mandate for some of the fastest growing industries in the world - it's literally the best job I never knew I wanted.
Personally, I have been a tech nerd from a young age. I grew up on video games, dabbled in writing HTML and creating websites but never felt I had the chops to do it full-time. I won't ever be a design guru, or create new paradigms in gaming, or ever lead a new 'bleeding edge' technology platform, but I could be the reason why five of the smartest guys in IoT end up on the same team to shape the future for us all. We all have our part to play.
I'm a big believer in a work/life balance, and not wasting your remaining time on this earth in a cubicle. Do what you love, and love what you do, while being proud of what you're not. I have been told again and again that aiming too high gets you a hard fall. That you can't have it all. Well, I am living proof if you don't settle if you keep aiming for the things you really want professionally no matter how lofty the goal, you will get there. It's not going to be easy. I had some tough days getting to where I am now, but it's all worth it when I look back. I try to be a champion now, for my candidates, and my clients in not settling for "good enough" when great is still out there.
I am always open to chatting, and making new acquaintances, so feel free to shoot me an e-mail! Despite the name 'Headhunters' we are are not nearly as scary as you think.
Keep your stick on the ice.
