Sarah Albert
I am a senior at Amherst College, pursuing a major in American Studies. For my senior thesis, I explored the obesity epidemic as a cultural crisis with inherent tensions embedded in the way the United States operates, rendering the public health threat complex, elusive, and exceedingly difficult to combat. My motivation to research this timely topic was influenced by a recognition that this crisis impacts every American citizen. Thus, the goal of my work focused on advocacy and action. I did not want to simply look at obesity as a public health crisis and a cultural phenomenon, but rather think about ways to resolve it. I decided to begin this blog as a way to give my research a life beyond my senior thesis in an attempt to be part of the national obesity debate and to help move the conversation forward in a social space accessible to the wider world.
I hope you enjoy this skinny on obesity and actively engage with me to shift the scale towards productive and permanent social and regulatory change.
