Sara Singh

Born and raised in Brampton, Sara loves community building and grassroots organizing. A PhD candidate at Ryerson University specializing in the field of public policy, she holds a Master of Arts in International Development Studies from Saint Mary’s University (Halifax, NS), and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from York University’s Glendon College (Toronto, ON). She attended W.G. Davis Middle School and graduated from Cardinal Leger Secondary in Brampton.
A social justice advocate, her research has explored precarious employment in Ontario, social housing in the Peel Region, and barriers to graduation for high school students in Guyana, South America. She has explored education policy in both global and national contexts, with her current work focusing on access to education for students with intellectual disabilities. She has worked as a teaching assistant at Ryerson University, helping to facilitate courses on international development, third world politics and Canadian social policy.
As a creative social entrepreneur, she founded Broadening Horizons in 2012, a non-profit organization that uses creative expression to engage youth in social justice issues. She has helped deliver community building initiatives such as ONE Mic, the Endless Possibilities show, the PowerofONE project, and Sikh Heritage Month at Beaux-Arts. The organization received an Ontario Trillium Foundation Youth Opportunities Fund Grant this year and Sara recently won a Brampton Board of Trade’s Top 40 under 40 award for her work in the community.
She’s a passionate activist, she’s also served as a member of the board of directors at Brampton Caledon Community Living, Community Living Ontario, the provincial federation of community living associations, and is president of the board of directors at Beaux-Arts Brampton, an arts-center in Brampton.
When she is not working or volunteering, Sara loves attending music and art festivals and taking road trips with her family!
