I’ve read 35 books this year, and I’ve watched 70 films. I love to look back at my list of books and measure my year based on how long it took me to finish each book in turn, or reread old reviews I wrote of movies and remember who I was when I watched them. I dabble in just about every genre for books, but my favorite recently has been memoirs. I guess I like to see someone else look back on their life as I try my very hardest to navigate my college years; they’ve been pretty confusing so far, so I like to think that memoirs help me gain a little perspective. For films, I love a good coming-of-age story like Greta Gerwig’s Ladybird. I called Arizona home for a really big chunk of my life, but I was eager to call Georgia home instead when I moved to Athens. For a long time, I cast aside my time in Arizona; as far as I was concerned, I was never going back, and the state was someone else’s home instead of mine. I went back last summer, though, to work at a summer camp in Prescott, and I remembered why I called it home and how much I loved to be in the sun. I thought of it as my character’s redemption arc; I saw a film scene in which I looked up at the trees and realized where I was meant to be. I love a good story, and I’m happy to be able to write my own each day.
